Customs seizes smuggled cooked meat (with photo)

Customs officers of Man Kam To Control Point yesterday (July 4) seized from an arriving lorry 80 kilograms of smuggled cooked meat, including offal and various hotpot ingredients. The total seizure was worth about $1400.

About 9pm yesterday, Customs officers intercepted a lorry arriving from Shenzhen, declared to be carrying vegetables.

After examination, Customs officers found two tin containers affixed at the bottom of the lorry compartment. They seized from the containers 80 kilograms of smuggled cooked meat, including cooked chicken, goose, pork, offal and hotpot ingredients.

A 49-year-old male driver was arrested. He has been charged with importing unmanifested cargo.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing unmanifested cargo is liable on conviction to a fine of $2 million and an imprisonment for seven years.
