Hong Kong Customs detects suspected case of smuggling leather products at Lok Ma Chau Control Point (with photo)

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (May 13) detected a suspected case of smuggling at Lok Ma Chau Control Point and seized a batch of leather products with a total value of about $100,000.

Customs officers intercepted an outgoing lorry, declared to contain panel, wheels and copy parts etc., for Customs clearance at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday afternoon. During inspection, officers found a batch of leather products, namely 11 pairs of leather shoes, eight leather belts and a leather handbag, inside the driving compartment, tool box and cargo compartment of the lorry. The 49-year-old male driver was arrested. He has been released on bail pending investigation.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
