Customs seizes heroin at airport (with photos)

The Customs and Excise Department cracked down a transnational drug trafficking attempt yesterday (October 13) and seized some 700 grams of heroin with an estimated market value of $580,000 at the Hong Kong International Airport and arrested a 27-year-old female from Mainland.

Customs officers intercepted a woman arriving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday morning for baggage examination and 37 mobile phone chargers were found in her suitcase. Examination later uncovered that the chargers contained a total of 700 grams of heroin.

The woman, who claimed to be a merchandiser, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (October 15).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
