Hong Kong Customs seized about 1.8 kilograms of suspected cocaine, with a market value of about $1.9 million, and arrested an incoming female passenger at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (May 22).

The arrested woman arrived in Hong Kong from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Abu Dhabi yesterday. During customs clearance, Customs officers found a batch of combs and hygiene products in her check-in baggage. X-ray check revealed suspicious images and in-depth examination led to the discovery of the suspected drug concealed inside the combs and hygiene products.

The arrested woman, aged 45 and claiming to be a nurse, was charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (May 24).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
