Hong Kong Customs yesterday (December 16) intercepted at Man Kam To Control Point an incoming container truck declared as carrying alcohol-based sanitiser and found on board the truck about 26 000 bottles of ethyl alcohol with an estimated market value of about $2 million.

Upon investigation, Customs officers found that the inbound container truck was suspected of conveying dangerous goods exceeding its exempted quantity without a dangerous goods licence issued by the Fire Services Department (FSD).

The case has been handed over to the FSD for follow-up investigation.

Customs has been in very close liaison with the FSD. The two departments conduct joint operations regularly to intercept the conveyance of dangerous goods exceeding the exempted quantity by inbound and outbound vehicles.

Under the Dangerous Goods Ordinance, a licence issued by the FSD is required for any vehicle used for the conveyance of Category 2 or Category 5 dangerous goods exceeding its exempt quantity. Offenders are subject to a maximum fine of $25,000 and imprisonment for six months.
