Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cocaine at the airport (with photo)

Hong Kong Customs seized about 720 grams of suspected cocaine with a market value of about $750,000 at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (July 30) and arrested an incoming female passenger.

The arrested female arrived at Hong Kong from Manila, the Philippines yesterday. During Customs clearance, Customs officers spotted suspicious X-ray images inside her handbag. Upon thorough examination, a total of 2 slabs of suspected cocaine weighed about 330 grams and 390 grams were found concealed inside the false compartments of the handbag.

The arrested female, aged 37 and claimed to be a telephone operator, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. She will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (August 1).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
