Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected smuggled dried sea cucumbers (with photo)

​​Hong Kong Customs today (March 28) seized about 1 989 kilograms of dried sea cucumbers from a container at the Kwai Chung Customhouse Cargo Examination Compound. The estimated market value of the seizure was about $850,000.

Customs officers, through risk assessment, inspected a container arriving from Egypt which declared to contain "squid bones". Upon examination, the dried sea cucumbers were found. Investigation is ongoing.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
