Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected smuggled goods (with photo)

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (April 19) seized a large quantity of suspected smuggled goods including more than 1 100 kilograms of geoduck clams, about 490 000 pieces of stationery, more than 6 300 pieces of skin care products and about 27 600 batteries, with a total estimated market value of more than $3 million in the waters off Waglan Island.

Customs officers intercepted a fishing vessel for searching yesterday evening in the waters off Waglan Island and found the unmanifested suspected smuggled goods on board the vessel. Two male crew members, aged 54 and 27, were arrested. Investigation is ongoing.

Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
