Hong Kong Customs foiled a transnational drug trafficking attempt yesterday (October 1) afternoon, and seized some 1.9 kilogrammes of heroin with an estimated market value of about $1.6 million at the Hong Kong International Airport. A 33-year-old man was arrested.

Customs officers intercepted a man arriving from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for baggage examination yesterday afternoon and found approximately 1.9 kilogrammes of heroin. The drugs were concealed in the false compartments of five children rucksacks in order to evade Customs' detection.

The arrestee, who claimed to be a businessman, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (October 3).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
