Hong Kong Customs yesterday (November 20) seized 70 suspected smuggled smartphones in total with an estimated market value of about $580,000 at Lok Ma Chau Control Point.
Customs officers conducted an anti-smuggling operation and intercepted two outgoing goods vehicles at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday. After inspection, 11 suspected smuggled smartphones were seized from the shoulder bag of one driver and 59 suspected smuggled smartphones were found wrapped around another driver's waist and inside the driving compartment.
During the operation, Customs arrested two male drivers aged 50 and 54 respectively. Investigation is ongoing.
Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
