An online shop trader was convicted and fined $36,000 today (December 13) at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts for supplying infant products with false trade descriptions in the course of trade, in contravention of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO).
Hong Kong Customs earlier received information alleging that an online shop displayed for sale on the Internet various types of infant products with false claims of brand names.
After investigation, Customs found that the online shop sold customers goods with brand labels different from those shown on the website, involving a total of 24 transactions.
Customs appeals to consumers to procure products at reputable shops. They should be cautious with online shopping.
Customs also reminds traders to comply with the requirements of the TDO. Under the TDO, any person who supplies goods with a false trade description in the course of trade or business, or is in possession of any goods for sale with a false trade description, commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
