Customs seizes $8.5 million worth of counterfeit mobile phone accessories

Customs officers from the Ports and Maritime Command yesterday (July 29) seized 130,000 pieces of suspected counterfeit mobile phone accessories, valued at $8.5 million, from a container.

During a cargo inspection operation at the Kwai Chung Container Terminal about 10.15am yesterday, the officers searched a 40-foot container on board a river trade vessel which had arrived from Huangpu. They found 130 000 pieces of suspected counterfeit mobile phone accessories, including mobile phone batteries and cartridges. The container was destined for Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A spokesman for the Customs and Excise Department said today (July 30), "Customs investigations are going on, and no arrest has been made."

Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person importing or exporting goods with forged trade mark is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000 and five years' imprisonment.
