Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cocaine at airport (with photos)

Hong Kong Customs seized about 2.2 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine estimated at $2 million at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (February 12) and arrested an incoming male passenger.

The arrested person arrived at Hong Kong from Sao Paulo, Brazil via Doha, Qatar yesterday. Upon baggage examination, Customs officers found the shoulder bag and the rucksack abnormally heavy. With X-ray check, false compartments were found in the shoulder bag and the rucksack. About 2.2 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine were found concealed in the false compartments.

The arrested male, aged 52, who claimed to be a merchant, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (February 14).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
