30 May 2005

To enhance the strike on smuggling of fresh pork and poultry meat at Sha Tau Kok, Customs officers stationing at the Shek Chung Au Check Post have conducted a series of operations from May 28 to suppress such illegal activities.

Shortly before midnight on May 28, a lorry coming out from the Sha Tau Kok Village was intercepted at the Shek Chung Au Check Post for search. As a result, 1,700 kilograms of pork valued at about $54,000 were found inside the cargo compartment; and a 36-year-old male driver was arrested.

At 5.10 am this morning (May 30), a public light bus running between Sha Tau Kok and Sheung Shui was also intercepted at the above Check Post. Customs officers arrested a 72-year-old female passenger; and seized a total of 10 kilograms of chicken and five kilograms of duck, valued at about $340, onboard.

The arrested persons and the seizures have subsequently been handed over to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department for follow-up action.
