Hong Kong Customs detects suspected case of smuggling smartphones at Lok Ma Chau Control Point (with photo)

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (January 18) detected a suspected case of smuggling at Lok Ma Chau Control Point and seized 891 smartphones with a total value of about $2.2 million.

Customs officers intercepted an outgoing private car at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday. During inspection, officers found the smartphones in the boot of the private car. The 29-year-old male driver was arrested.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
