Customs detects suspected smartphone and computer random access memory smuggling case at Lok Ma Chau Control Point (with photo)

Hong Kong Customs detected a suspected smuggling case at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday (February 1) and seized 508 smartphones and 1 700 pieces of computer random access memory (RAM) worth about $2.7 million in total.

Customs officers yesterday intercepted for inspection an outgoing lorry which was declared as empty. Upon examination, a false compartment at the fuel tank of the lorry was found to contain the batch of smartphones and computer RAM. The 58-year-old male driver was arrested, and the lorry was detained for further investigation.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
