Suspected counterfeit medicine seized at Lo Wu

14 Jan 2004

A man was arrested at Lo Wu Control Point this morning, following the seizure of 576 bottles of suspected counterfeit medicated oil and 576 bottles of suspected counterfeit liquid medicine.

Shortly before noon, the officers intercepted a 44-year-old man, upon his return from the Mainland. As a result, the officers found 1,152 bottles of medicine bearing suspected forged trademarks inside his trolley. The seizure was worth about $24,700.

The arrested man has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, anyone importing goods with a forged trademark is liable to a maximum penalty of a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.

A Customs spokesman said officers had stepped up enforcement action at boundary control points to curb smuggling of prohibited items into Hong Kong.

He appealed to the public to be patient when going through Customs checks at the boundary as the officers had to check for illegal importation and exportation of prohibited goods.
