The Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) has implemented the "Smart Crossing" Scheme with a view to improving the recognition rate of the licence plate numbers (LPNs) of cross-boundary private cars (CBPC) through radio frequency identification (RFID) technology at the land boundary control points.
The owner or driver of a CBPC can voluntarily join the Scheme by providing his/her name and LPN for registration at no cost. After registration, Customs officers would affix an RFID tag to the windshield of the CBPC. When the CBPC passes by the Customs kiosk, the driver and passengers can then enjoy a more efficient customs clearance service.
Free of charge
Upon verification, the Customs Officer would affix a "Smart Crossing" RFID tag (length 10.7 cm and width 2.8cm) to the top right corner of the windshield on the spot.
